Eighteen hours after Matthew Shepard was attacked he was discovered by a driver of a car passing by the attack scene.  The car initially mistook M.S. for a scarecrow tied to a primitive farm fence.

Upon discovery it was determined that M.S. was in a coma, his attackers concentrated their attacks primarily on three areas:  GROIN; HANDS; SKULL. The only clean areas on his face were the frozen tear lines on his cheeks – the rest of his face was disfigured and bloody.
